When closed, the candlesticks resemble a silver metal sphere with flat edges. In the center of each half of the sphere is a hole where the base of the candle holder fits. Both halves are engraved with the words "Shabbat Kodesh" (Holy Sabbath).
To use the candlesticks for lighting Shabbat candles, the sphere is opened, and each half holds a candle holder. The candle holders can be left in place for lighting, or the halves of the sphere can be inverted, with the candle holder positioned on top, fitting into the hole from the opposite side.
